Cambodge temple d'Angkor - Baphuon - ANGKOR WAT

It was a little frustrating to walk past such a monument and not be able to visit it. One of the centerpieces of Angkor Thom, Baphuon, remained closed to the public for a long time for restoration. It was barely possible to walk around it.

It was an enormous undertaking: a puzzle of more than 300,000 stones scattered over several hectares, some weighing several tons! Each stone is numbered and recorded in archives… which burned during the war! The work, which was interrupted in 1970, consisted of reconstructing everything, and the result is a true challenge, judging by what is visible.

Baphuon is located in the northeast of the Angkor Thom complex, near the capital city of Angkor Thom. The temple is designed as a stepped pyramid, rising to a height of approximately 34 meters, with a series of successive terraces surrounded by galleries. The main structure was originally decorated with sculptures and bas-reliefs depicting Hindu deities, notably Shiva, as well as mythological scenes. In the center, a shrine housed an image of Shiva, a symbol of the Hindu faith at the time.

The restoration has restored Baphuon to some of its original splendor, notably by reconstructing the large reclining statue of Vishnu, which was a central feature of the site.

This temple also bears witness to the religious transition in the Khmer Empire, from a predominantly Hindu to a Buddhist orientation, which is visible in the repurposing of the site and the modification of its iconography over time.

C’était un peu frustrant de passer devant un tel monument et de ne pas pouvoir le visiter. Une des pièces maîtresses d'Angkor Thom, Baphuon est resté longtemps fermé au public pour restauration. On pouvait tout juste en faire le tour.
Il s'agissait d'un travail énorme : un puzzle de plus de 300.000 pierres éparpillées sur plusieurs hectares et dont certaines pèsent plusieurs tonnes ! Chaque pierre est numérotée et enregistrée dans des archives …qui ont brûlé pendant la guerre ! Le travail qui a été interrompu en 1970 a consisté donc à tout reconstituer et le résultat est à la dimension du défi à en juger par ce qui est visible.

Baphuon se trouve au nord-est du complexe d’Angkor Thom, à proximité de la capitale Angkor Thom. Le temple est conçu comme une pyramide à degrés, culminant à une hauteur d’environ 34 mètres, avec une série de terrasses successives entourées de galeries. La structure principale était à l’origine ornée de sculptures et de bas-reliefs représentant des divinités hindoues, notamment Shiva, ainsi que des scènes mythologiques. Au centre, un sanctuaire abritait une image de Shiva, symbole de la foi hindoue de l’époque.

La restauration a permis de redonner à Baphuon une partie de sa splendeur d’origine, notamment en reconstruisant la grande statue de Vishnu allongé, qui fut un élément central du site.
